The Importance of the Second Amendment by Gabrielle Seunagal

The second amendment states the following:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

This amendment is crucial to the prosperity, survival, and greatness of the United States of America. The second amendment was put in place to leave power in the hands of the people so they may be free and protect themselves against a tyrannical government. As government gets stronger and more powerful, it is imperative that the second amendment is cherished and protected.

There are some people who believe the second amendment is a danger to our society. They believe in gun control laws and believe these laws will protect Americans from mass shootings. This logic is greatly flawed and woefully ignorant. And I'll explain why.

Gun control laws do absolutely nothing to protect the American people from mass shootings. And do you know why? These laws are ineffective because the only people who really follow gun control laws are law abiding citizens. Criminals do not and will not ever follow these laws. These ridiculous laws merely make it more difficult for law-abiding civilians to obtain guns, while criminals (who obviously don't follow laws) will obtain guns through theft, the black market, or other illegal means.

Our second amendment rights are a necessity because the alternative is a nightmare. The American people need to have access to firearms, so that if they are ever in a life-threatening situation, they can use a gun to possibly save their lives and the lives of others. Statistics don't lie: An overwhelming amount of mass shootings occur in "gun-free" zones.

An example is Paris. Paris has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. Back in November 2015, a horrific massacre occurred and over 120 people were slaughtered. These people were at the mercy of ruthless psychopaths with Ak-47s, and they are no better off for it. Now imagine if one of the victims had a gun on their person at the time these people decided to attack innocent civilians. They could have shot one of the militants and saved many of lives in the process.

I want to make it very clear that gun control laws have not and will not ever stop criminals because criminals do not follow the law. By protecting the rights of the second amendment, we protect the lives of the innocent.

If you study history, you will notice that the government has an un-ironic habit of taking over unarmed people. An example of this is in Germany from 1938 to 1945. 13 million Jewish people were rounded up and exterminated because they did not have the means to protect themselves from a cruel dictator. In 1935, Mao Tze Tung, the communist dictator of China, established gun control. As a result of this, 20 million political dissidents were rounded up and killed. The list goes on and on. The message is clear: The second amendment protects us from tyranny.

Ironically, the very people who push for gun control do not feel the same way when it comes to their safety or the safety of their loved ones. Famous politicians and others who advocate for gun control are protected by police officers with guns, bodyguards with guns, etc. Deep down, these people know that guns protect lives. They don't want guns taken away from them, but they want to take away guns from the American people. Wonders never cease.

In the end, the truth is this: Our founding fathers intended for us, the American people, to bear arms. To stress the importance of this, notice that it is the second amendment which comes right after the first amendment. As a nation, we are not truly free if we can not protect ourselves from evil. Whether you are liberal, moderate, or conservative, it is your Constitutional right to bear arms, and no government has the right to infringe upon that.
